About Silver Spring
Silver Spring was founded in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, who discovered a mica-flecked spring in the area and later called the surrounding land Silver Spring. The city later adopted the name.
By the end of the 19th century, Silver Spring saw significant growth, and this major expansion continued through the 1950s, when Silver Spring became the second largest retail market between Baltimore and Richmond. However, in the 1960s, the city entered a period of decline.
Silver Spring today
After years of development, the downtown area started to see signs of revitalization in the 21st century, upon the creation of a new outdoor shopping plaza and several large corporations moving to the area. In 2005, downtown Silver Spring was even awarded with the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence silver medal.
With several ethnic, entertainment, art, film, and music festivals each year, Silver Spring has grown to be a cultural and entertainment center. In addition to countless events, it’s home to The Fillmore, a 2,000 seat live music venue, and the American Film Institute’s Silver Theater and Cultural Center, a movie theater that showcases artistic American and foreign films.
In addition, Silver Spring’s extremely diverse population has led to a wide array of local restaurants, with dining options from virtually every corner of the globe.
