About Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill began seeing major development as the federal government started hiring large numbers of employees between 1799 and 1810. Capitol Hill’s original residents were men working on the construction of the U.S. Capitol and craftsmen employed nearby who built and repaired ships at the Washington Navy Yard. The area continued growing through the 1880s, and in the 1890s, it became one of the first areas to have access to modern conveniences like electricity and plumbing.

In 1976, Capitol Hill became one of the country’s largest historic districts. The area has remained a middle-class community since its formation. Current estimates show about one-third of Congress members reside in this area while working in the District.
