Woodley Gardens

Woodly Gardens Woodley Gardens is one of the larger neighborhoods in Rockville, Maryland and was developed during the early 1960s by Monroe Warren, Sr. and Monroe Warren, Jr. The elder Warren built the Kennedy-Warren and Tilden Garden apartments in the District. He also developed numerous residential units in Rockville. Woodley Gardens earned the distinction of being Montgomery County’s original pre-planned community. To achieve this, the developers used a new zoning category. It allowed them to design the whole neighborhood instead of individual lots in a specific locality.

Burtonsville

Burtonsville is an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland. The community was originally known as Burton’s derived from Isaac Burton who bought out his siblings’ shares from his father’s land. He emerged as one of the major landowners back in 1825. History

During the colonial period, Burtonsville was referred to as the PATUXENT Hundred and later the Eastern Branch Hundred. It was a community comprised of about 100 residents. Another prominent property-owner was Richard Snowden, an iron master, who owned numerous land patents in the area. These included Snowdens Manor and Snowsden Mill which occupied 9,265 acres and 546 acres respectively. The community grew around the intersection of Old Columbia Pike and the road going to Sandy Spring. In 1850, Isaac Burton was appointed first postmaster of the first post office in Burtonsville. The mail facility operated from Burton’s store. The town center is located at the intersection of MD Route 198 and US Route 29.

Burtonsville Day

Burtonsville holds an annual “Burtonsville Day” to celebrate its culture and history. The event features small social gatherings in different venues around the town. There are activities such as petting zoos and various games. The major event is a big parade that marches through town. One of the organizations involved is the Burtonsville Lions Club. Residents are also treated to golf, basketball and soccer games as well as an ice cream eating contest. The Burtonsville Day celebration last year was held at the Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center. The 2013 parade participants were from the Boys and Girl Scouts of America, Paint Branch and Springbrook High School marching bands, local politicians, and private citizens.

All vendor booths were occupied for the first time since 2008. There were 4,000 people and about 50 merchants who attended the festivities. Aside from kids’ activities, the festival also features an auto show, health fair, pet show, local dance teams, and food treats from the Burtonsville chapters of the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus.

Hyattstown

Friendship Heights

Friendship Heights is made up of residential areas and commercial facilities surrounding the northwestern part of D.C. and the southern area of Montgomery County. It is a pleasant community with retail shops, high-rise apartment units, and accessible transportation just around the corner. In spite of this development, this neighborhood in D.C. and Maryland is more of a village than a busy market district.

History of Friendship Heights

The origins of Friendship Heights were unassuming. The name’s terminology originates from the 3,000-acre “Friendship” land grant to colonists in 1713. During the 1800s, a family of Quakers (Shoemakers) from Philadelphia cultivated the roadway of Georgetown and Frederick, which is now Wisconsin Avenue. At the turn of the 20th century, the trolley car trail from Georgetown connected with the southern boundary of Montgomery County, encouraging local businessmen to build homes for travelers. Among the businessmen was the descendant of original settler Samuel Shoemaker—a lawyer for the prohibitionist group called the Anti-Saloon League of Washington D.C. Another founder was Henry Offut, a grocer from Georgetown who eventually became a banker.

Friendship Heights Village, including the Offutt Subdivision, was recognized by the Council of Maryland County in 1914. In the past, village homeowners held a hog slaughter every year. Part of the autumn ritual was to shoot the animals using a .22-caliber rifle, then boil the game before removing its fur.

Commercial Neighborhood

A lot of people go to Friendship Heights for a wholesome shopping experience. If you go up to Wisconsin Avenue, there are many and varied retail outlets. The commercial district is anchored by two large malls. One is the Mazza Gallerie, home to a luxurious specialty department store (Neiman Marcus), an upscale consumer retail enterprise (Williams Sonoma), and an AMC theater. The second mall, the _{Chevy Chase} Pavilion, houses the Embassy Suites Hotel, a J Crew specialty retailer, and a World Market that sells furniture, home accessories, food, and wine. At the south end are fashionable specialty shops that sell Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Christian Dior.

Calverton

Cross_Creek_ Montgomery Calverton is a distinct neighborhood, with a park owned by Montgomery County right at the center of the community. In addition to Galway Park, you can find Cross Creek Golf Club, Calverton Elementary School, Calverton Swimming Club, Academy Child Development Center, two more schools, and a conservation area inside this large community.
