About the National Zoo

When the zoo was created, officials strives to acquire one or two examples of as many species as possible. However, as many species of wild animals began to decline in numbers and become more difficult to find, it became apparent that something more had to be done.

In the mid 50s, the Zoo began focusing on taking better care of its animals, in addition to aiding conservation efforts. And by the 60s, the Zoo also took on work studying endangered and threatened species, as well as researching the breeding and behavior of zoo animals and how best to meet their needs. As a result, today the Zoo’s animals live in natural groupings, as they would in the wild, as opposed to alone. And many of its rare species are able to successfully breed and raise offspring.

Visiting the Zoo

Today, the Zoo hosts approximately 2 million guests each year. Many visit to see one of the Zoo’s main attractions, the giant panda habitat. The Zoo’s two pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, gave birth to a female cub, Bao Bao in 2013, and the family is being studied to learn how to preserve the species. Other popular exhibits include the Asia Trail, Elephant Trails, Lemur Island, an interactive visitor think tank, and the Great Ape House.

About the Folger Shakespeare Library

The Folger Shakespeare Library was established by Henry Clay Folger, a businessman who avidly collected works of Shakespeare. When searching for the perfect location for his library, he chose an area adjacent to the Library of Congress and had to spend years buying the homes that occupied that space. Folger died soon after the library’s cornerstone was laid in 1930, but his wife, Emily, saw the project to completion. The library officially opened on April 23, 1932, on what is considered the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth.

The Folger Shakespeare Library was constructed with a white marble exterior, and slightly raised sculptures of Shakespearian scenes appear on the building’s sides. The interior design is a Tudor style, complete with plaster ceilings and oak paneling. The grounds even feature an Elizabethan garden with plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays or those that were common in his time.

Visiting the Shakespeare Library

The library has over 300,000 books and manuscripts, along with countless other artifacts, like playbills, prints, and photos. In addition to Shakespeare, it’s also home to other English works and houses the world’s third largest collection of pre-1641 English books.

Areas of the Folger Shakespeare Library that are open to the public include its Elizabethan theatre, an exhibition gallery, and a gift shop. And the library frequently holds artistic and cultural programs, including theatrical performances, concerts, poetry, lectures, and exhibits.

History of the U.S. Botanic Garden

The idea to create a botanic garden was first suggested in 1816 by Washington, D.C.’s Columbian Institute for the Promotion of Arts and Sciences, and in 1820, President James Monroe reserved five acres of land for the project. Initially, this “national greenhouse” faced many obstacles, including swampy land, severe funding limitations, and lackluster record keeping. However, by 1824, there were over 450 kinds of plants growing in the garden, with some from as far as China and Brazil.

Despite closing in 1837, the garden was re-instituted in 1842 with Lt. Charles Wilkes’ return from an expedition to the South Seas. He returned with an extensive collection of horticultural and botanical specimens, many of which had previously been unknown in the United States.

The U.S. Botanic Garden today

Today the garden boasts more than 10,000 living specimens. Some are over 165 years old. And the garden includes three locations: the Conservatory, Bartholdi Park, and the Production Facility. The Conservatory has nearly 30,000 square feet of growing space and eight garden rooms. Each room replicates a different habitat. Bartholdi Park is located south of the Conservatory and strives to inspire guests to develop and improve their own home gardens. And the Production Facility is located in Southwest D.C. and is instrumental in growing and storing plants and maintaining the collection.
