Kemp Mill

Sligo CreekKemp Mill is a small community in Montgomery County. It is part of Silver Spring which is also in Maryland. Tourists will enjoy the shops and restaurants in the commercial area. And when you’re planning your next family weekend you should think about visiting Kemp Mill.

Brief History

A map of Maryland that dates back to the late 18th century shows a mill owned by a Quaker minister and political activist named Evan Thomas. Francis Valdenar bought the frame saw and grist mill in 1833. Then in 1857, Valdenar sold this mill to George Kemp who renamed it Kemp Mill. The family operated the mill until 1905 and unfortunately in 1919, the mill burned down. The Maryland National Park and Planning Commission acquired the site in 1957.

Kemp Mill Today

There are numerous Jewish synagogues as well as Jewish and Catholic parochial schools in this community. Kemp Mill Recreation Center was constructed and now houses basketball and tennis courts, a baseball field and playground. A spacious meeting place was also constructed for residents. Sligo Creek emerges from Kemp Mill and has become the most developed sub-watershed of the Anacostia River. The Sligo Creek Trail for hikers and bikers connects Kemp Mill to downtown Wheaton and links up with the tributary trail system in Anacostia. We highly recommend this riding adventure.

Kemp Mill Shopping Center is the neighborhood’s trade nucleus. This quaint neighborhood mall is complete with two restaurants; two banks; grocery outlet, dry cleaner, barber shop, pharmacy, nail and hair salon, mini gymnasium, and martial arts training facility. Assorted pastry shops and doctors’ clinics also occupy the complex. However, the famous anchor store for decades, Giant Food Grocery, closed down on September of 2007. A small local chain (Magruder’s) refurbished the facility and opened two months later. It did not last long and ceased operations in July of 2012. Businessman Shalom Kosher, who owns a Kosher store in Wheaton, acquired Magruder’s and opened a second retail shop on Lamberton Drive the same year.

Silver Spring

Wonderful Attractions

While at Silver Spring, do not fail to visit Acorn Park which is described as the remaining memory of Francis Preston Blair’s “Silver Spring” historic estate.  According to history books, the spring with shiny mica minerals was discovered in 1840. Nearby is a peculiar small park with good-looking frescos and acorn pergola. Meanwhile, Rock Creek Park is one of the most amazing urban recreational areas in DC.  It is the habitat of raccoons, coyotes, deer, and owls along with various tree species. Amusement amenities consist of trails for cycling, hiking and horseback riding; playground for kids and picnic area; tennis stadium; golf course, outdoor venue for concerts; and, planetarium. The 14-acre Jessup Blair Park has two public tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer field, and picnic grounds. It is also a favorite of local residents and visitors. Sligo Creek Trail is a 10-mile path which is also one of the oldest in Montgomery County. It starts at the boundary of Prince George, goes through Montgomery and ends at Wheaton Regional Park. Sligo Creek Park is made up of nine smaller parks with sports facilities and common recreational building.

Silver Spring Today

Silver Spring’s redevelopment, which began at the dawn of the 21st century, was exceptional. Areas adjacent to the City Place Mall were rebuilt completely to make way for the new shopping plaza. It was named “Downtown Silver Spring.” Modern retail shops and restaurants opened in this location. The revival of the city and its 160th year anniversary was marked with the production of a documentary, “Silver Spring: Story of an American Suburb” which came out in 2002. From that period, development continued with the construction of office buildings, condo units, and commercial establishments. The New York Times published an article in 2007 about Silver Spring and highlighted that the urban center experienced a rebirth and emerged as an arts and entertainment seat because of massive investments. Laytonsville

Laytonsville, MarylandLaytonsville is one of the smaller municipalities in Montgomery County, Maryland. It used to be called Cracklintown which came from “cracklin’ bread”, which is one of the original baked delicacies in the locality. The crossroads of Laytonsville’s northern district goes directly to the principal urban areas of the state. These include Damascus and Frederick County in the east to Baltimore, southward to Washington, D.C. and west of the Potomac River.

About Laytonsville

Laytonsville stretches behind the unspecified borders of Sandy Spring. The town extends over the huge estate which was once owned by Quaker pioneer James Brooke. However, it never became “Quaker country.” Anglicans and Methodists joined Sandy Spring social events and business activities as well as farmers’ clubs and other organizations. There were also a lot of intermarriages during that time.

John Layton put up a brick farmhouse in 1785 on the site where the present-day Laytonsville is located. An old tavern, general store, tailor shop, and the St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church made up the ephemeral Cracklin Town. The town started to progress in the 1840s with the construction of several stores, business establishments and residential houses. A post office was finally built in 1861 while a Methodist Church was established in 1867. Laytonsville farmers were blessed with very fertile loam soil which does not dry out very quickly making it an ideal farming land.

Nearby Attractions

While visiting Laytonsville, you can take the opportunity to visit popular attractions near the town. Clara Barton National Historic Site is one. The National Park Service renovated 11 rooms including the bedroom of Clara Barton, living rooms, and Red Cross offices. Another popular tourist spot is the Battleground National Cemetery which is 17 miles away from Laytonsville. This military cemetery lies along Georgia Avenue close to Fort Stevens. It is managed by the National Park Service. Congressional Country Club is a country club and golf course in Bethesda. It was established in 1924 and has hosted many prestigious tournaments including the U.S. Open several times.

About Takoma Park

Benjamin Franklin Gilbert founded Takoma Park in 1883, and he bought large pieces of land on which many of the city’s original homes were built. Sitting at an altitude of 350 feet, Takoma Park was high enough to bypass the malaria and mosquitoes that tormented the District. The area grew rapidly and was incorporated into a town in 1890. In 1976, much of Victorian old town became a part of the Takoma Park Historic District.

Takoma Park is known for its liberal and “left of liberal” values. The city was the first in the U.S. to approve a voting age of 16 and allows residents who are not American citizens to vote in municipal elections. The area is also a nuclear-free zone.

Culture

Takoma Park is home to several cultural events each year, including its folk festival, street festival, jazz fest, independent film festival, and Fourth of July Parade. In addition, a nationally known blues record label, Takoma Records, was founded in the city in the late 1950s.

Today, community revitalization efforts are taking place in the city. The local historic society is overseeing work currently underway to build the Historic Takoma Museum. And the Takoma Theatre Conservatory is working to renovate the currently vacant Takoma Theatre, which will become a multipurpose facility.

About Gaithersburg

Settled as an agricultural area in 1765, Gaithersburg was originally called Log Town. However, Benjamin Gaither inherited a portion of the land in the late 1700s, and by the 1850s, the area was known as Gaithersburg. The city was incorporated in 1878 and remained a small farm town until the 1970s, when the population grew and the area became more suburban. Today, Gaithersburg is one of the most ethnically and economically diverse areas in the D.C. region.

Notably, Gaithersburg was chosen as one of six locations around the world to house an International Latitude Observatory in 1899. These stations measured how much the Earth wobbled on its polar axis and operated until computers made them obsolete in 1982. However, the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory remains a National Historic Landmark – the only one in the city.

Gaithersburg Today

Modern Gaithersburg is divided into east and west regions. The east is the older area that boasts the city’s historic business district, Olde Towne, along with the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
