Chinatown

Visiting Chinatown

Chinatown Gate in Washington DCChinatown is a historic Washington, D.C. neighborhood near the center of the city. Located east of downtown, the area is home to several Asian restaurants and businesses.

If you’re interested in exploring Chinatown, just call Affinity Airport Sedan for a ride there. Let our professional, ground transportation service navigate D.C.’s traffic-packed streets, so you can sit back and ride stress-free.

About Chinatown

The area that is currently Chinatown was once populated by mainly German immigrants. However, in the 1930s, Chinese immigrants started calling the neighborhood home after being displaced from their original location on Pennsylvania Avenue, where the government began building Federal Triangle, a large government office complex. With the new Chinese residents came decorative latticework and signs written in Chinese characters.

The Friendship Archway, a traditional Chinese gate arching high over H Street NW, was dedicated by the city in 1986. Designed by local architect Alfred H. Liu, this bright, colorful $1 million art piece includes seven tiled roofs, with the tallest sitting at 60 feet high, along with nearly 300 painted dragons modeled after those in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Friendship Archway is known as the world’s largest single span archway.

 Chinatown Today

Today, Chinatown is only approximately 21 percent Asian, despite having a 66 percent Asian population in 1990. Many Chinese Americans relocated to suburbs in Maryland and Virginia after the 1968 riots, seeking economic stability and safer environments.

Chinatown is currently a thriving community, with countless restaurants, bars, and shops, in addition to the Verizon Center, a convention center and sports and entertainment arena. While many businesses in the area are national chains with no Chinese influence, all shops are required to hang signage in Chinese characters, which helps maintain the area’s sense of heritage.

Enjoy getting a feel for Washington D.C.’s Chinatown district. And if you need a ride to Chinatown from one of the District-area airports or train stations, don’t hesitate. Just call Affinity!

About Takoma Park

Benjamin Franklin Gilbert founded Takoma Park in 1883, and he bought large pieces of land on which many of the city’s original homes were built. Sitting at an altitude of 350 feet, Takoma Park was high enough to bypass the malaria and mosquitoes that tormented the District. The area grew rapidly and was incorporated into a town in 1890. In 1976, much of Victorian old town became a part of the Takoma Park Historic District.

Takoma Park is known for its liberal and “left of liberal” values. The city was the first in the U.S. to approve a voting age of 16 and allows residents who are not American citizens to vote in municipal elections. The area is also a nuclear-free zone.

Culture

Takoma Park is home to several cultural events each year, including its folk festival, street festival, jazz fest, independent film festival, and Fourth of July Parade. In addition, a nationally known blues record label, Takoma Records, was founded in the city in the late 1950s.

Today, community revitalization efforts are taking place in the city. The local historic society is overseeing work currently underway to build the Historic Takoma Museum. And the Takoma Theatre Conservatory is working to renovate the currently vacant Takoma Theatre, which will become a multipurpose facility.

Come out and soak up the culture of Takoma Park, and for a ride there, know you can count on Affinity!

About Gaithersburg

Settled as an agricultural area in 1765, Gaithersburg was originally called Log Town. However, Benjamin Gaither inherited a portion of the land in the late 1700s, and by the 1850s, the area was known as Gaithersburg. The city was incorporated in 1878 and remained a small farm town until the 1970s, when the population grew and the area became more suburban. Today, Gaithersburg is one of the most ethnically and economically diverse areas in the D.C. region.

Notably, Gaithersburg was chosen as one of six locations around the world to house an International Latitude Observatory in 1899. These stations measured how much the Earth wobbled on its polar axis and operated until computers made them obsolete in 1982. However, the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory remains a National Historic Landmark – the only one in the city.

Gaithersburg Today

Modern Gaithersburg is divided into east and west regions. The east is the older area that boasts the city’s historic business district, Olde Towne, along with the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. To the west, there are wealthier neighborhoods that were influenced by New Urbanism, a design movement that strives to create walkable neighborhoods, multiple different housing types, and diverse populations.

Today, the city boasts major employers like IBM, Lockheed Martin, and The National Institute of Standards and Technology. And with exciting attractions like museums, skate and water parks, farmers markets, and art exhibits, there’s plenty to keep you occupied while you’re there.

Come and enjoy Gaithersburg for yourself. And for all of your transportation needs while you’re in town, you can always count on Affinity!
